Comment by kjor September 26, 2006 @ 10:39 pmWhere is your answer going or is there one?
Sandy, great idea. I like your growing grass on the top…a metaphor for our online course. Hopefully, it will bring forth buds and blooms!
Comment by Dabareh September 27, 2006 @ 12:23 amHi Mom! I get a notice from email and then I go to the blog and can post a comment. I don’t know if we will use this but I glad you found my site. Jay has a site also-called DAWG (drilling and water guy!) See if you can find that one!
Comment by Sandy Johnson September 28, 2006 @ 12:17 amDabareh- Thanks for finding me! This wasn’t the easiest thing to use but I think we finally figured it out!
Comment by Sandy Johnson September 28, 2006 @ 12:20 amI love online learning. I especially like being able to log in when I can and work when I feel like it. I help out my team at my school when they need me in order for them to feel comfortable. We talk and discuss what is going on and what is expected of us as a class. Once you get into online learning, it becomes easier for the learner. I think at first it can be confusing and somewhat overwhelming. I do expect that all links will work, posting will take place when they need too, and that I will get a response of some kind when I “speak” through posting.
If I am the designer/facilitator, I will remember to always answer or respond when someone posts, emails, or puts up their assignment for me. I do not want students to feel that they are “out there” by themselves. I think to foster online community, I must be an active part of that community myself.
I guess my biggest questions is how would you choose the few things to use in the limited amount of time for teaching a class when there are SO many wonderful technology tools out there. How do we decide which tools will help students learn, keep their interest, and promote community?
Put on your interviewer hat and discuss what 2 or 3 questions you still have that you would ask of an expert in online learning communities.
Comment by Sandy Johnson October 11, 2006 @ 12:54 amHi Sandy,
Great questions.
This online teaching is such a great interactive tool. Perhaps online teaching could be compared to an educational interactive TV. I can envision some very imaginative and creative applications to teach online. It seems like each lesson would be almost like producing a show.
See you tomorrow,

I agree with your question about which ones? If we compile all the possibilities, the list would be miles long. I think we might need to create an evaluation sheet for tools in our courses…specific criteria that would best “fit” our purposes and the needs of students. A standardized evaluation could help us weed-whack some pithy tools so that the flowers could thrive (sorry!) 🙂

It is sooo hard to just pick a few things. I like how Vicki likened it to producing a show. You have a limited amount of time with a show, therefore, you’ve got to figure out the best resources for the time constraints. I know that I can definitely run over my time allotments, I hope you all will be co-producers and help make this show a highly rated one.

Hola Sandy!
Comment by Susie Bussmann October 19, 2006 @ 2:10 amYou are a risk taker indeed! No wonder you are ahead of the online learning curve. Obviously, there is no easier answer to the dilemma of what and how many tech tools to use in an online class. And it only gets more confusing, because we all know there are new ones being created constantly. Perhaps the OTLO group will develop a set of criteria or a rubric as part of their course development. I suspect there will be some external factors, like school policies, infrastructure issues etc., that will automatically limit the use of certain tools. =;->
Hi There,
Comment by brucecranmer October 20, 2006 @ 12:56 amIt took a little time to find you, I did, so I guess no one is safe anymore. I also like the fact that I have the ability to work at my convience and take a break whenever I feel the need. I feel the world of education is about to change more in the next two years than it has in the past hundred. New technology should prevent students from being lost until the class meets the next time as help is just a click away. I am now looking at ways to improve the hardware we are currently using. I have some ideas and would like to solicit some technical advice and support to develop them. I may try to find online education or engineering to implement this effort. I would like to try webcams to get the face to face concept back into this education process. Any ideas? Let me now. Thanks for everything. Bruce
